How to hang wall art without nails — a complete guide
Introduction
When it comes to decorating a home, art is a wonderful way to bring personality and style to your walls. Sometimes, though, using nails is either not possible or not what you want. Perhaps you rent and would rather not leave permanent damage, or you simply don't have the tools to hand. Whatever the reason, it is worth knowing there are several clever ways to hang art without a single nail or hole.
Why avoid nails?
Rented homes: landlords rarely appreciate walls full of holes.
Decor you change often: if you move pieces around or swap your decor regularly, nail holes soon take their toll on the walls.
Delicate walls or wallpaper: some surfaces, plasterboard and wallpaper in particular, are difficult to work with and damage easily when you use nails.

Alternatives to nails
Here are a few popular methods for hanging art without nails, so you can decorate without damaging your walls.
Tesa adhesive nails
Tesa adhesive nails are an excellent option when you want to hang art without making holes. The strong adhesive lets you mount pieces of various sizes and weights on smooth surfaces, which makes them ideal for hanging art at home. They work for both lighter and heavier pieces and can be adjusted so your art hangs straight. A real advantage is that you can remove them whenever you like without leaving marks or damage, which makes changing your decor or swapping pieces around straightforward.
Clean the surface — make sure the wall where you will fix the nail is clean, dry and free of dust and dirt. This helps the adhesive grip properly.
Attach the adhesive strip — peel the backing film off the adhesive side and press the strip onto the wall. Hold firm pressure for around 5–10 seconds.
Fit the nail — attach the adhesive nail to the strip and press it into place.
Adjustable — adjust the height of the nail as needed so the piece hangs straight.
Hang your art — now you can simply hang your piece on the nail.
When you want to remove the nail, pull the adhesive strip slowly downwards so it releases without damaging the wall.

Command hooks and strips
Command hooks and strips are another way to mount art without nails. They are easy to use and leave no marks when removed.
Why Command hooks work well
No damage to your walls — these hooks and strips come off without leaving a trace.
Strong and dependable — used correctly they hold a surprising amount of weight, which makes them an excellent choice for hanging art without drilling.
How to use Command strips
Clean the surface — make sure the wall is free of dirt and dust.
Attach the strips — place the strips on the back of the piece and press against the wall for at least 30 seconds.
Wait before hanging — give the adhesive time to bond before hanging the piece, for the best result.
Adhesive nails and hooks
These work much like Command hooks but are particularly good for heavier pieces. The adhesive is stronger, so they carry more weight than standard Command strips — a smart option for mounting on a wall without drilling.
Mounting adhesive for lighter pieces
For lighter pieces, mounting adhesive works very well. You apply it directly to the wall and fix the piece in place without nails or hooks. It is a practical method when you want to hang art on wallpaper without nails.
How to apply mounting adhesive
Clean the surface thoroughly.
Apply the adhesive in small dots on the back of the frame.
Press the piece against the wall and hold it there for a few seconds.
Displaying art on shelves
If you have shelves or picture ledges, this is an easy way to display art without hanging anything on the wall at all. It also gives you the flexibility to swap pieces around whenever you like.
