How to hang wall art like a pro - tips for a perfect result
October 2, 2024 · Sara Gustafsson

Hanging a picture looks simple, but getting a good result takes a little planning and technique. Hung well, a piece lifts the whole room, creates balance and can even bring out other details in your decor. In this guide we cover everything from preparation to the finer techniques that will help you hang wall art like a pro. An introduction to hanging wall art
Why hanging art properly matters
Hanging art properly matters for both looks and function. Put a piece in the wrong place and it never quite works — or worse, it throws the whole room off balance. Following a few sound techniques helps you avoid the common mistakes and create a space that feels inviting.
What good placement does for a room
A well-placed piece becomes a focal point, lifts the surrounding decor and gives a room a more finished, considered look. It also helps create a sense of symmetry and balance.

Before you hang anything
Choosing the right wall
Before you start drilling or putting up hooks, take a moment to choose the right wall. Think about the layout of the room and which wall will show your piece off best.
Getting the height right
The classic mistake is hanging art too high. A good rule of thumb is to hang it at eye level. If you are hanging several pieces, center them on the same line for a consistent look.
Tools and materials you will need
The basics
To hang art safely and neatly you need a few basics: a hammer or drill, a tape measure, a spirit level and a pencil. A picture-hanging kit with an assortment of hooks, nails and screws is well worth having too.
Choosing between hooks and nails
The right hook or nail depends on how heavy the piece is and what your wall is made of. There are plenty of options, and picking the right one is what keeps the piece hanging securely. If you are drilling, you will need screws rather than nails.
Choosing the right spot
Working with the rest of the room
Your piece should not only suit the wall but sit well with everything else in the room. Think about the colors, style and materials around it before deciding where it goes.
Why lighting matters
Good lighting does wonders. Placing a piece where it catches natural light, or using directed spotlights, can make the artwork genuinely stand out.
Hanging several pieces together
Creating a gallery wall
If you have several pieces and want to build a gallery wall, plan the arrangement carefully. Start by laying everything out on the floor so you can try different combinations before committing to the wall. A gallery wall can be symmetrical or asymmetrical, depending on the look you prefer. Common mistakes to avoid
Getting the height wrong
The most common trap is hanging pieces too high. As a rule, the center of the piece should sit at roughly eye level, which usually means about 145–155 cm from the floor. For gallery walls and collages, make sure the heights are evenly distributed across the arrangement.
Using the wrong fixings
The wrong fixings are a common reason pieces sit unevenly or, at worst, come down and damage both the wall and the artwork. It pays to choose carefully, based on both the weight of the piece and what the wall is made of.
For lighter pieces such as photographs or smaller works, small nails or adhesive hooks are usually enough. Adhesive solutions have the advantage of leaving the wall undamaged, which is particularly useful in rented homes where you would rather not make holes. Bear in mind, though, that they have a limited weight capacity and are not suitable for heavier pieces. For larger, heavier artwork, a sturdier system is essential. Traditional hooks combined with expanding plugs or wall anchors matter especially on plasterboard or concrete. These give the stability needed to keep a piece hanging safely over time. It is also worth using two hooks rather than one, which spreads the weight more evenly and reduces the risk of the piece tilting.
How to protect your walls
Using adhesive hooks
Adhesive hooks are a popular choice if you want to avoid making holes. They attach easily and come off without leaving marks. The important part is choosing hooks rated strongly enough for the weight of your piece.
Avoiding damage to delicate surfaces
If your walls are delicate — plasterboard or wallpaper, for instance — padded hanging systems or specialist hooks help keep damage to a minimum. When using nails, drilling a small pilot hole first reduces the risk of cracking the wall.
Color scheme and theme
Your pieces should sit well with the room's color scheme for a coherent, considered look. If the room has a neutral palette, you can either stay within the same tones for a calm, unified feel, or break it up with something colorful for a livelier, more personal effect. Another approach is to work to a theme — nature motifs, abstract art or photography — to give your decor a thread running through it
